A new prison complex with the capacity to accommodate one thousand inmates, in a land in extent of 2.5 acres belonging to the Prisons Department located in Pa’n’nai area in Jaffna, will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 272 million. Sri Lanka’s Cabinet Thursday gave approval to the above
proposal submitted by Sri Lanka Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison
Reforms D. E. W. Gunasekara.

The Jaffna Prison is now functioning in four rented
houses.

The new prison complex will also include facilities needed for
rehabilitation of detainees, according to the proposal.
